Goal

I CAN spot different toy animals under water and bring them out of the water by diving

Success criteria

The child achieves the goal when they bring the animal they are looking for, represented by the upside-down card, to land by diving.

Environment/Space/Equipment

·       Different toy animals
·       Pictures of the animals (Laminated images with a black background)
·       Shallow water swimming pool

Group management

You can play this game individual, in pairs or in groups. The group size is based solely on the number of animals. The animals are distributed crosswise. No special set-up is required for this. The teacher either stands in the water and observes the learners or stands at the edge of the pool. The safety aspect of diving must be emphasised. The teacher must pay particular attention to the children when they are diving.

Time/Duration/Schedule

The duration of the game varies according to the number of toy animals, group size and diving ability.

Pre-requisite

Breathing, diving

Description

Use laminated cards with pictures of toy animals on the front and a black background on the other side. Place the cards face down at the edge of the pool.  The black side should face upwards. Place the cards across the pool, distributing the toy animals evenly. A child can then turn over a card to recognise a toy animal. The child must then dive for this animal and bring it ashore. Once the animal is placed on the card, the child can draw a new one.
