Environment/Space/Equipment

Swimming pool, one lane, a kickboard, and an object.

Group management

Base exercise: Students in pairs with similar skill levels, surface and submerge at the teacher’s signal, given from outside the pool. At the signal, react quickly to grab the object before the partner.

Time/Duration/Schedule

Main part of the class, after warm-up.
Estimated duration: 5 minutes

Pre-requisites

Control the vertical balance in shallow water or the vertical flotation in deep water.

Description

Students are grouped in pairs. They submerge at the teacher’s command, aiming to react quickly to a sound stimulus given by the teacher, to grab an object placed on top of a kickboard faster than their partner. The student grabbing the object first earns 1 point.

Variation: The object is non-floating. Students must retrieve it from the bottom of the pool and place it on top of the kickboard.
