I CAN move a floating board across the water using only arm movements without touching it.
I DO move the board by controlling my movements in the water without touching it.
I KNOW how water resistance works and how to use movements to affect objects in the water.
I REACT by adjusting the direction, rhythm and type of arm movement to influence the movement of the board.
The child can move the board at least 5 meters across the water surface using arm movements without touching the board and demonstrate understanding of how their movement affects the water and the board.
Environment: Shallow swimming pool or open water where children can stand (hip-depth).
Space requirement: Approx. 5x2 meters per child.
Equipment: 1 floating board per child (standard swimming board).
Group size: Single, Pairs, Small group (<10)
Children spread along the edge of the shallow pool or designated area.
The instructor ensures safety and clear observation by using shallow water and setting physical boundaries. Instructor can be inside or outside of the pool depending on number and age of children.
1-5’ minutes
Can be used as part of warm-up, main, or ending session.
Water habituation, Orientation, Surface movement awareness
Instruction: “Your goal is to move the board floating on the surface of the water by using only your arm movements. You are not allowed to touch the board. Try to move it from one point to another (at least 5 meters).”
Differentiation/progression: Increase distance. Work in pairs (relay-style). Use boards of different shapes/sizes. Try with different arm movements (scooping, circular, pushing).
